How to Save for a Big Purchase or Financial Goal
Planning for a big purchase? Whether you’re saving for college, your first car, a tournament trip or another major milestone, having a plan can make a big difference. By setting clear goals, creating a budget and making smart spending decisions, you can build good money habits, grow your savings and prepare for the things that matter most. Here’s how.
Start With a Goal and Timeline in Mind
The first step in any savings plan is to know exactly what you’re saving for. Set a specific goal and decide when you want to reach it. Then, break that larger goal into smaller monthly or weekly savings amounts.
For example, if you want to save $5,000 for a car and reach that goal in two years, you’ll need to save $2,500 per year, or around $210 per month. Having smaller milestones in mind can make your overall goal much easier to manage and track.
Put Your Savings Somewhere You Won’t Spend It
As you're working toward your goal, think about where you want to keep your savings. If you have a checking account that you use to spend money, that may not be the best place for it. Instead, consider opening a separate savings account with help from a parent or guardian so you won’t be tempted to spend the money. Plus, many savings accounts earn interest, which can act like a bonus for your savings.
Create a Budget That Works for You
Once you know how much you want to save and where you’re going to save it, it’s time to start working toward your goal. This is where a budget can help. To create a budget, start by listing the money you receive and the money you spend, including things you need (like food or gas) and things you want (like games, clothes or movies). After that, choose an amount you can realistically set aside each week or month.
Look for Everyday Savings Opportunities
Now it's time to put your plan into action by looking for ways to save in your daily life. This can feel challenging at times, especially when there are so many things to spend money on, but every day presents new opportunities to save.
Instead of going out to eat, have lunch at home. If there’s something you’d like to buy, try waiting a week or two to see if it goes on sale. Look for free or low-cost options for spending time with friends, like hanging out in a park rather than going to see a movie.
When you receive unexpected cash, such as birthday money or gifts from family, think about putting some of it toward your goal. You can still use some of that cash for fun, but the more you can save now, the sooner you can reach your goal.
Stick With Your Savings Goal
Big goals don’t happen overnight. Reaching them takes time, patience and consistency. Be sure to track your progress so you know how far you have to go, and take time to celebrate milestones along the way.
The important thing is to set a goal and stick to it, even if you’re only able to save a small amount at a time. Every dollar you save today is a step toward the things you want tomorrow.
