RECREATION PROGRAM

VOLUNTEER REQUIREMENTS (Est. January 2023)

The Tonka United Recreation Program is a volunteer based program and has been for over 40 successful years. Over the past few years it has become harder and harder to have enough volunteers to coach, assist with fields, put on the season ending Tonka Blast event, etc. After many years of not requiring families to volunteer & surveying other community sports programs, Tonka United has decided to implement a volunteer requirement. A volunteer deposit will be collected at the time of registration. We have many volunteer opportunities to choose from which will allow for a return of your deposit once your family volunteer obligation is fulfilled. We understand families are busy so this is also seen as the ability to opt out of volunteer hours. While this is a change for us at Tonka United, it is in the norm for most youth activities/sports. Your volunteer time is not only needed, it is a way for you to connect with your child, their friends, and the community.

VOLUNTEER REQUIREMENT INFORMATION

  • A $100 volunteer deposit is charged to the family account at the time of seasonal registration.
  • Only one shift per family is required.
  • Maximum Three Rostered Coaches per team will be refunded 100% of the volunteer deposit.
  • Other than coaching, most volunteer shifts within the club are about 2 hours.
  • After fulfillment of volunteer obligation, the $100 deposit will be refunded back to the credit card charged.
  • Refunds will be processed at the end of the month of service.
  • Volunteer shift sign-ups via SignUp Genius.

VOLUNTEER FAQs

  • Multiple players in the program?

Only one (1) volunteer shift is required per family regardless of the number of players registered in the Rec season.

  • Does a Team Manager or Parent Coach for a Competitive team get refunded for the Rec volunteer requirement?

Yes, You are a current volunteer within the club and therefore exempt from needing to fulfill any additional volunteer hours. You will be refunded the $100 deposit (similarly to the Rostered Coaches for the Rec teams). Please email rec@tonkaunited.org to notify the Recreation Coordinator if you are currently a Competitive Volunteer Team Manager or Parent Coach.

  • Does it matter which volunteer event I sign up for?

No. You can sign up for any open shift listed on the Recreation SignUp Genius page.

  • How long are shifts?

Volunteer shifts (outside of coaching) are generally 2 hours. Volunteer shifts may differ slightly but should not exceed 3 hours. There is no overlap from one shift to the next, so please be on time!  The time allocation is listed for each shift on the event sign-up.

  • Can I split a volunteer shift with someone else in my family?

No. The shifts are only 2 to 2.5 hours long. If only one person cannot commit to the time frame of the shift, do not sign up and please select a shift that is better suited for your schedule.

  • Can I opt-out of my shift requirement?

Yes, at the time you register your player for the season, you pay a $100 volunteer deposit fee.

    • If you select "NO" to volunteering at the time of registration, you are choosing to opt-out.
    • If you do not sign-up for a volunteer shift before the end of the season, you will be considered “opted-out of your volunteer requirement” and the deposit will not be refunded.
  • What happens if I don’t show up for my shift?

We understand that things come up and schedules change, so if you are unable to make it to the shift you signed up for, please remove your name from the sign-up at least 72 hours in advance. The shift will “lock-in” 2 days prior. If you do not show up for your scheduled shift, you automatically forfeit your refund and are considered “opted-out of your volunteer requirement.”

  • What happens if I don’t complete my volunteer shift?

If you do not complete a shift you signed up for, you automatically forfeit your refund and are considered “opted-out of your volunteer requirement.” Do not sign up for a shift you are not able to fully commit to and please select a shift that is better suited for your schedule.

  • Shifts filled up fast - will more be added?

More shifts will be added as the season progresses but please look to sign up for any open or available slots first. Sometimes people will remove themselves from a shift.

  • Can my child work a shift?

Most shifts are intended for ages 16 and older. If a shift is open to a person below the age of 16, it will be notated in the shift description.

  • What if my shift is canceled due to weather, etc?

You will be notified by Tonka United staff if you do not need to report for your scheduled shift due to weather or field conditions. Communications will be sent to the email used in SignUp Genius.

Sharing your experiences, skills, passion, and time makes an impact in the experience for our players and families.

Thank you for your part in contributing to the success of our entire community.

WE APPRECIATE YOU!
