Tonka United Newsletter, Volume 9

Club Communications | April 24, 2021

This past week was filled with more emotional extremes for so many in our community. At Tonka United, our focus and number one priority - always -  is that all members of our community (players, parents, coaches, staff, referees, board members, etc.) feel safe and secure. We recognize that members of our community have different lived experiences and we remain committed to supporting our players and families by providing an environment where all are valued and accepted. Diversity. Inclusion. Respect. Teamwork. These are easily some of the buzz-words of late, AND these are also the core values Tonka United is grounded in as an organization. Soccer is the number one international sport, played in every corner of the globe. It is a uniting activity that celebrates difference. We believe and remain hopeful that all members of the Tonka United family will conduct themselves with pride for our beloved community and also respect for the differences within and around.

Good luck to the many teams playing this weekend (and next) during tournament play. The Spring Season is just getting started and we look forward to witnessing how much that work ethic throughout winter training will shine through!

Tryout dates have been announced. Watch your current Team Snap calendars for those dates, times, and locations for your age group. The full schedule will be published on the website soon and you can look for registration to open mid-May.

The PreK through 9th grade players will get their season going this week at Freeman Park or St. Therese. We are so excited to have so many families - new and returning - joining us out on the fields. Good luck and have FUN!

All Little Juniors and Recreation families should download the NEW Demosphere App for access to team rosters, schedules and team communications. Stay connected!

We still have some teams that need a coach. Consider volunteering and spending fun, active, quality time with your child and their teammates!

This week, on April 22nd, Governor Walz updated the Guidance for Outdoor Youth & Adult Sports and Activities. Much is the same with the exception of the requirement to wear masks while actively playing. See bullet points below along with the link to the full guidance.

  • Masks are optional for players in outdoor games and practices (while engaged in the activity). Masks must still be worn when participants (including coaches, referees) are not actively practicing or playing and cannot maintain social distancing.
  • All players, coaches, referees and spectators, as applicable, should complete the following symptom screening exercise prior to attending any training or match:
    • Do you have a temperature of 99.5 (F) or higher?
    • Do you have a new or worsening cough today?
    • Do you have any of these other symptoms?
      • Shortness of breath or difficult breathing
      • Fatigue
      • Muscle or body aches
      • Headache
      • New loss of taste or smell
      • Sore throat
      • Congestion or runny nose
      • Nausea or vomiting
      • Diarrhea

If you have any of these symptoms, do NOT attend.

  • Players should bring their own hand sanitizer to training and games as well as an extra mask, just in case
  • Players should be spaced 6ft apart as much as possible on the sidelines.
  • Parents should space 6ft apart from others not in their household or wear masks on the sidelines.
  • Parents should drop off and pick up from practices versus staying to watch.
  • Carpools should be avoided as much as possible.
  • Team indoor gatherings should be avoided.

We would like to emphasize that we are, and will be, following the guidance in force by MDH and the CDC.  We do this in order to provide activity for your children.  We are here to serve all players and families by providing soccer programming.

All COVID exposures or positive cases need to be reported FIRST to Bobbi Hoebelheinrich at bobbi@tonkaunited.org. She will assist in determining next steps for your player and team.

This time of year is a toss-up of beautiful days, rain, storms and even winter.  With that we also need to be more protective of grass as it takes hold.  Plan on playing unless you hear from us or your coach.   If you are on turf, you will play unless there is lightning or snow.  Grass, it will depend on the amount of rain we have had (or are having).  Each location can differ as we do not control all of the fields and each city or school district will let us know if things are open or closed.  Many times we do not know until late in the day.  Please have patience as we promise to let you know as soon as we do.

We are excited to announce our Free Play Family Fridays! This exciting opportunity has been created with the intention for players and families to have fun and explore playing soccer with fellow community members outside of the training environment.
