TRAVELING TEAM SELECTION PROCESS

Player Development & The Team Selection Process

In order for players to develop they need to play at the appropriate level with other players of similar skill, athleticism, competitiveness, and a similar commitment to training.

Playing level commitment guidelines coming soon!

In order to aid this process player feedback will be provided throughout the season on the specific aspects of their game that require attention. This could and should affect the decision to move players to a more appropriate and developmental level of play at the end of the season. If this is not happening please contact your coach/trainer directlly. We will do our very best to monitor player feedback but PLEASE DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE END OF THE SEASON TO ASK HOW YOUR CHILD IS DOING. By this point it is too late!!! If we can share the responsibility of your child's development we encourage you to ask questions of your coach or trainer. The Director of Coaching is available to ensure that this process is being implemented.

Teams are not set in stone from season to season and players may move up and down between teams. Players will also have opportunities to play up during the season based upon Coach, Trainer, Technical Director and DOC observations. Players develop at different rates, but it is important to understand that individual development is a process.

Tonka United is committed to devloping ALL of it's players. Coaches, players and parents must view long term player development and a commitment to training as their primary focus.

“Soccer is as much art as science. The game should be played attractively as well as effectively. Soccer is a game of skill, imagination, creativity, and decision making. Coaching should not stifle, but enhance those elements. Neither should politics or alternative interests.”

Bobby Howe, former U.S. Soccer Director

Players will be evaluated using the five components in player evaluation/skill assessment.

TECHNICAL: fundamental skill

TACTICAL: decision making

PHYSICAL: fatigue

PSYCHOLOGICAL: mental

LIFESTYLE: social. (attendance and commitment to the team and the team selection process)

All of these components contribute in some way to a player’s effectiveness in the game. There is no magic formula but a high degree of competency is desired in all.

In evaluating a soccer player, we consider the five components of the game and see where the player ranks overall in consideration of each of the five categories. Ultimately players are assessed on their ability to influence the game.

Player Observations Include:

  • Greatly influences the game
  • Influences the game
  • Involved in the game without dominating
  • Sporadic involvement in the game
  • Contributes little to the game

Evaluation Criteria-The players will be evaluated on:

a. Speed-technical, speed of execution and/or speed of thought. A player must have some sort of speed to their game.

i. Technical speed is the ability to settle a ball and get the pass or shot away quickly.

ii. Pure speed is the natural running speed of an athlete.

iii. Speed of thought is the ability to read the game and be able to be in the right place at the right time

b. Technique-What is their first touch and passing skills like under the pressure of a match.

i. With regard to evaluating technique, if a player has a poor first touch then they will always be fighting the ball to make subsequent decisions.

c. Character-Work-rate, coachability, desire.

i. In regard to character, evaluate the player’s fighting spirit and their ability to compete.

ii. Do they work off the ball?

iii. Do they enjoy the game and have a love for the sport?

It is important that these evaluation criteria be set and understood so that players have a base line measurement and know what the evaluators are looking for in a player.

Player Evaluation Procedure:

Players will be evaluated in a small sided game (4v4 to 8v8) situation leading to a large sided evaluation (8v8/11v11) with players playing in their preferred position where possible. Evaluators may randomly move players to different teams & fields to allow evaluators to observe players in different environments. Players may also remain stationary and play on the same field but with different players for the entire session.

Small Sided Games are used to identify the talent and subsequently categorize the talent. No drills will be utilized or employed. The evaluators will look at the player’s speed, decisions and executions under realistic game-like conditions and not sterile exercises.

There are far too many circumstances where players tested out well in the drills but made poor decisions in the game. Therefore, a player will be evaluated on the decisions, executions and speed under match/game conditions.

Final Team Selection:

Upon conclusion of the evaluation/tryout process, team selection meetings will be facilitated by the Director of Coaching, Technical Director and the head coach (if identified) for each team. More informaion coming soon!!

To help parents and players deal with this difficult process we encourage you to talk frequently with your child's coach so that feedback can be given over time. The DOC will explain the rational for the selection process but it is not the intention to re-visit the decision making process.
